Modern industrial products are complex combinations of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and software systems. Traditionally, individual engineering disciplines have developed their own methods, tools, and analyses to develop systems in their domain. Companies now need a strategic approach to develop multidisciplinary architectures that efficiently meet the growing requirements and use cases for their products. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) enables the development of such architectures along with a formal methodology. MBSE helps in developing a multidisciplinary system holistically by reducing gaps among various engineering silos in the organization.
A good MBSE adoption strategy not only focuses on the selection of the tool, language, and methodology, but it should also enable efficient interfacing with Requirements engineering functions, as well as design and analysis functions in the various downstream engineering disciplines. This can enable a digital thread across engineering artifacts enabling traceability of engineering decisions throughout the system’s development across various disciplines.
