A diverse workforce reflects the multifaceted nature of today's global market, enabling companies to better understand and meet the needs of their customer base. Inclusive environments allow employees to voice their opinions without fear of bias or retribution. This not only enhances collaboration and teamwork but also attracts top talent, as individuals increasingly seek employers who value diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Today, embracing diversity and inclusion is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage that can drive sustained business success and resilience in an ever-evolving marketplace. Susan Goffee, Vice President, Performance Marketing & Analytics at PenFed, brings over two decades of national and global experience to the table. In a recent HCLTech Trends and Insights interview, she shared her insights on the role of technology organizations in promoting an environment where women can thrive.
"The pace of technological advancement is extraordinary and has been evolving for years. Throughout my extensive career in tech, I've witnessed significant strides for women, not just in leadership roles but also in shaping inclusive practices. The rapid changes we experience today offer an unprecedented opportunity for diverse voices to drive innovation in our industry," stated Goffee.
The role of organizations in DEI and mentoring
When asked about the role tech organizations play in empowering women, she responded, "It's so important for companies to instill a diverse environment where women feel empowered." She emphasized the necessity of having women in senior leadership positions, allowing younger female employees to see relatable role models.
Organizations must recognize that achieving a good work-life balance is vital. Goffee pointed out that women often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as family and career, which necessitates flexibility in the workplace. "An organization needs to adapt and give flexibility," she added, calling for a shift away from the traditional 9-to-5 mindset that often overlooks the realities faced by women.
Reflecting on her own experiences, she highlighted the significance of mentorship in her career. "Mentorship is so important. Every human should have one," she asserted while recalling a pivotal moment in her career when she was tasked with implementing a major Adobe platform across three countries at a young age. Thanks to her mentor, she gained the confidence and skills necessary to succeed in that challenging role.
Goffee also mentioned the value of having both male and female mentors. "A man gives a different perspective, but it's important to have a woman as well because she can relate more," she explained. This balanced mentorship approach enables a comprehensive understanding of the challenges women face in the workplace.
Driving organizational change
True organizational change in diversity and inclusion requires us to confront uncomfortable truths, challenge the status quo and envision a future where every individual feels seen, heard and empowered to contribute their unique strengths.
When discussing how organizations can implement a culture of inclusivity, she stated that change must come from within. "The moment they understand that diversity brings more creative ideas, it empowers women," she said. She advocates for the formation of community groups within organizations that support women and other underrepresented groups, providing a space for shared experiences and mutual encouragement.
Organizations should not merely expect women to demand change; rather, they should actively create an environment conducive to growth. "It has to be from within the organization to empower women to continue their journey," she asserted.
As the conversation drew to a close, Goffee was asked to share advice for women navigating their careers in tech. Her message was both inspiring and practical: "You will stumble, you will fall. Get back up, dust yourself off and carry on. Keep your head held high." She emphasized that resilience is key in an ever-changing industry. "Everything changes so much with innovation and technology. Stay focused, continue to grow in your career and give yourself the opportunity to evolve," she advised.
