Fonterra: Safeguarding data and embracing a cloud-first future

Fonterra: Safeguarding data and embracing a cloud-first future

Fonterra, a dairy co-operative owned by thousands of farming families in New Zealand, serves dairy products to more than 140 countries worldwide. As Fonterra began to explore new ways of working, co-op officials decided it was time to embrace a large-scale transformation, prioritizing strict security protocols to protect its data.

The Challenge:

Fonterra, which has thousands of users and hundreds of physical locations, was struggling to collaborate and securely manage and quickly access data among users across the globe. Because the co-op lacked a solution for data classification, officials were concerned about potential noncompliance with regulatory standards and leaks of confidential data.

The Objective:

HCLTech, a longtime partner of Fonterra, conducted a compliance and privacy workshop for the co-op to understand its infrastructure and showcase the approach we wanted to take to solve its challenges. To manage data across numerous users and global locations, Fonterra needed to adopt an agile, user-friendly solution that would enhance its digital capabilities while guaranteeing data security.

The Solution:

After competing against an incumbent solution provider, HCLTech was awarded the project. We led Fonterra’s digital transformation by implementing several Microsoft solutions, including Purview Information Protection, Data Lifecycle Management, Data Loss Protection and Insider Risk Management. This elevated Fonterra’s data strategy and provided a critical foundation for safely leveraging AI technologies. In addition, Fonterra adopted HCLTech’s proposed cloud-first strategy by migrating 40% of its workload to Microsoft Azure, which easily integrated with Fonterra’s existing systems, optimizing overall project costs.

The Impact:

The partnership between HCLTech and Microsoft to transform digital operations at Fonterra had significant positive impacts, including:

  • Catalyzed a shift in data management: HCLTech’s implementation of Microsoft products changed the co-op’s approach to managing the data lifecycle, adding new safeguards to sensitive information across the organization’s global operations
  • Improved security: A fortified data and security posture has allowed Fonterra to foster more secure connections among farmers and customers, which has reduced the risk of financial and reputational loss from data leaks
  • Optimized supply chain and manufacturing processes: By streamlining communications, using a variety of data analytics and creating more efficient supply chain and manufacturing processes, Fonterra has been able to elevate the quality of its products

“Our choice of HCLTech and Microsoft was driven by their expertise in crafting solutions that prioritize advanced data governance needs,” said Helius Guimaraes, Chief Digital and AI Officer at Fonterra. “Leveraging Microsoft Purview technologies has not only fortified our data and security posture but also amplified our IT services, enhancing accessibility for our workforce.”

WaterNSW: Keeping tabs on the community’s water needs

WaterNSW: Keeping tabs on the community’s water needs

WaterNSW supplies two-thirds of the water used in New South Wales, a southeastern Australian state. The organization also operates the state’s river systems, providing various services to customers, including water licenses.

The Challenge:

WaterNSW was using legacy systems that lacked the functionality to produce water data quickly — information it needed to respond immediately to problems, such as flooding or trash that impacted water flow. Plus, without the ability to gather data quickly, WaterNSW struggled to efficiently comply with a complex web of regulatory requirements.

The Objective:

WaterNSW had to find a way to continue meeting its community’s water needs while ensuring that the assessment and licensing teams could seamlessly access the data required to comply with various mandatory regulations for license approvals.

The Solution:

HCLTech helped WaterNSW leverage the tools offered by the Microsoft Azure data platform, including:

  • Azure Data Factory to automatically retrieve complex files from the application source
  • ADLS2 Data Lake to cleanse and enrich incoming data
  • Synapse Serverless SQL to act as a common endpoint for data analysis and reporting, enabling users to access self-service analytics to meet their objectives
  • Power BI to provide dashboards and data reports to gain insights and make decisions

The Impact:

HCLTech’s partnership with Microsoft led to the following positive results for WaterNSW.

  • Eased the collection of key data: By leveraging tools in the Azure platform, WaterNSW can gather data efficiently, allowing the organization to unlock substantially more value from its license application information in a relatively short timeframe. This has allowed the company to reduce the time staff members need to watch videos and head to work sites, often in remote areas, to detect water issues.
  • Enhanced analytics: Using Power BI and Synapse Serverless SQL, users can now access various analytics, enabling teams to derive insights from core data quickly and quickly. For instance, when monitoring water levels, a video feed determines whether levels have increased or decreased and then provides alerts through the analytics platform, prompting staff to respond.
  • Improved compliance: The project has satisfied WaterNSW’s primary goal: to adopt a modern data platform that enhances the customer experience and helps it seamlessly adhere to a complicated range of regulatory reporting requirements. WaterNSW’s system ensures that the company remains fully compliant without incurring penalties.

“HCLTech has been able to supercharge our progress in the video analytics space … by providing exceptional expertise,” said Phil Glastonbury, Manager of Water and Asset Systems for WaterNSW.

The City of Joondalup: Embracing the cloud to improve customer service

The City of Joondalup: Embracing the cloud to improve customer service

The City of Joondalup in Western Australia began engaging with Microsoft and HCLTech in 2020 to explore the possibility of replacing its core business system with Microsoft cloud technology. As part of an extensive evaluation to determine how the city could improve its operations, HCLTech provided a comprehensive gap analysis to compare the city’s existing technology stack with the advanced capabilities of the Microsoft platform.

The Challenge:

Like many cities throughout Australia, Joondalup was using an outdated enterprise resource planning (ERP) tool from TechnologyOne that was failing to provide the support the city needed to efficiently manage rate payments, financial transactions, supply chains, service requests and human resources for the area’s growing population.

The Objective:

The city council wanted to replace its on-premises technology with an advanced ERP solution to allow the city to gain greater visibility into interactions with ratepayers while boosting the system's reliability, scalability and ease of use.

“We wanted to provide a 360-degree view of each ratepayer and improve the ease of use for employees,” said David Murnain, Manager of Information Technology for the City of Joondalup. “In migrating to the cloud, we also wanted to increase the security and reliability of our platform, optimize our costs and allow for scale as the population grew.”

The Solution:

The City of Joondalup selected Microsoft Dynamics 365 and HCLTech’s Power Rates module to replace its on-premises ERP system. HCLTech also helped the city adopt Microsoft’s Azure cloud infrastructure. The city council could improve its customer service by gaining easier access to key data and streamlining internal processes.

The Impact:

HCLTech’s implementation of Microsoft’s holistic, end-to-end Dynamics 365 platform has provided several benefits to the City of Joondalup, including:

  • Enhanced communication: By augmenting Microsoft’s cloud-based platform with HCLTech’s Power Rates module, Joondalup has incorporated more than 20 discrete business functions into one easy-to-use system, including pool inspections, development approvals and waste management. This has allowed for greater communication and data sharing among teams.
  • Streamlined workflows: By rolling out Microsoft Dynamics 365 to 850 employees and moving critical workloads to the platform, as well as Microsoft’s Azure cloud infrastructure, the city has streamlined processes, creating cost-saving efficiencies in several areas of its operations.
  • Improved customer service: By gaining a 360-degree view of the customer, from tracking everything from billing rates to resident requests, the City of Joondalup is better able to quickly serve the needs of its growing customer base.

“Microsoft wowed us with their vision for integrated cloud technologies and their high-level executive support for the council,” Murnain said. “And HCLTech’s powerful rates calculator will enable us to increase operational efficiency and provide a better experience for residents.”
