Summary
Our client is a leading regional utility company serving over 6.7 million customers. The company invests in renewable energy and energy efficiency programs to evolving customer needs and to promote environmental stewardship. The company embarked on a strategic initiative to modernize grid operations by implementing an OSII Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), which provides a shared network model for monitoring and controlling assets across the grid while optimizing and securing grid operations. The ADMS also receives and publishes data from external systems such as weather forecast information, information to and from the regulatory entity, social media and the energy market. The company called upon HCLTech to perform comprehensive testing of the ADMS.
The Challenge
Complex grid infrastructure, high reliability requirements and regulatory compliance
The utility operates a vast and complex grid infrastructure composed of substations, distribution feeders, switches and other network components spread across a wide geographical area.
With millions of customers relying on the utility for their energy needs, ensuring high reliability and minimal downtime is paramount. In addition, the utility must comply with stringent regulatory requirements and standards governing grid operations and reliability.
The Objective
Optimal distribution grid performance and security
To ensure optimal distribution grid performance, the utility tapped HCLTech to conduct testing and quality assurance on its ADMS platform.
The Solution
Thorough testing for optimal grid performance and security
The testing scope encompassed several aspects of the ADMS solution, including testing core functionalities such as distribution management, network optimization algorithms, FDIR (fault detection isolation and restoration) and outage management. HCLTech also conducted integration testing to ensure seamless integration with existing systems and interfaces, including SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), the GIS (geographic information system), the OMS (outage management system) and CIS (customer information systems).
Performance testing assessed the scalability, responsiveness and reliability of the ADMS platform under various load conditions, including peak demand periods and emergency scenarios.
Lastly, we performed security testing to evaluate the ADMS solution’s ability to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities and threats to the grid infrastructure and customer data.
.
The Impact
Reliability, scalability and security
HCLTech’s collaboration with the client in conducting comprehensive testing yielded several key results:
- Validation of functionality: The ADMS platform demonstrated robust functionality across all tested areas, including outage management, distribution optimization and fault detection
- Seamless integration: The ADMS solution is seamlessly integrated with existing systems and interfaces, enabling real-time data exchange and coordination between grid management systems
- Scalability and reliability: Performance testing confirmed the scalability and reliability of the ADMS platform and its ability to handle peak loads and emergency situations without performance degradation
- Enhanced security: Security testing identified and addressed potential vulnerabilities, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of grid operations and customer data
As proved by this case study, testing is a crucial element in any technology implementation, as it validates the value of a solution before it goes into production, reduces risk and amplifies business benefits.
