WaterNSW: Keeping Tabs On The Community’s Water Needs

WaterNSW: Keeping Tabs On The Community’s Water Needs

WaterNSW supplies two-thirds of the water used in New South Wales, a southeastern Australian state. The organization also operates the state’s river systems, providing various services to customers, including water licenses.

The Challenge:

WaterNSW was using legacy systems that lacked the functionality to produce water data quickly — information it needed to respond immediately to problems, such as flooding or trash that impacted water flow. Plus, without the ability to gather data rapidly, WaterNSW struggled to comply with a complex web of regulatory requirements efficiently.

The Objective:

WaterNSW had to find a way to continue meeting its community’s water needs while ensuring that the assessment and licensing teams could seamlessly access the data required to comply with various mandatory regulations for license approvals.

The Solution:

HCLTech helped WaterNSW leverage the tools offered by the Microsoft Azure data platform, including:

  • Azure Data Factory to automatically retrieve complex files from the application source
  • ADLS2 Data Lake to cleanse and enrich incoming data
  • Synapse Serverless SQL to act as a common endpoint for data analysis and reporting, enabling users to access self-service analytics to meet their objectives
  • Power BI to provide dashboards and data reports to gain insights and make decisions

The Impact:

HCLTech’s partnership with Microsoft led to the following positive results for WaterNSW.

  • Eased the collection of key data: By leveraging tools in the Azure platform, WaterNSW can gather data efficiently, allowing the organization to unlock substantially more value from its license application information in a relatively short timeframe. This has allowed the company to reduce staff members' time to watch videos and head to work sites, often in remote areas, to detect water issues.
  • Enhanced analytics: Using Power BI and Synapse Serverless SQL, users can now access various analytics, enabling teams to derive insights from core data quickly and quickly. For instance, when monitoring water levels, a video feed determines whether levels have increased or decreased and then provides alerts through the analytics platform, prompting staff to respond.
  • Improved compliance: The project has satisfied WaterNSW’s primary goal: to adopt a modern data platform that enhances the customer experience and helps it seamlessly adhere to a complicated range of regulatory reporting requirements. WaterNSW’s system ensures that the company remains fully compliant without incurring penalties.

“HCLTech has been able to supercharge our progress in the video analytics space … by providing exceptional expertise,” said Phil Glastonbury, Manager of Water and Asset Systems for WaterNSW.

Nestlé: Using Analytics to Understand Customers Better

Nestlé: Using Analytics to Understand Customers Better

Nestlé, the Swiss multinational food conglomerate, is the world's largest publicly held food company, measured by revenue and other metrics. Twenty-nine of Nestlé’s brands have over $1.1 billion in annual sales and, therefore, require a business platform with comprehensive analytics capabilities to track each brand's performance and consumer behavior. HCLTech, through our partnership with Microsoft, implemented a solution catered to the needs of one of those brands — Nescafé Dolce Gusto (NDG).

The Challenge:

NDG needed a better solution to analyze global consumer behavior, particularly for its coffee machines. This analysis informs marketing and promotional strategies. However, their previous business platform could have been more efficient and gave lagging results for promotions, typically taking end users at least 72 hours (about three days) to see sales and customer data. This system used a Magento 1.0 infrastructure and was plagued by quality issues. Users needed extensive manual intervention to develop targeted customer strategies or run predictive analyses. These lagging indicators and incomplete data sets impacted sales, leaving marketing teams a step behind when adjusting strategies and fine-tuning promotions. In addition to these problems, the system wasn’t scalable and came with high maintenance costs.

The Solution:

HCLTech developed a new system that uses Azure and Kafka to transform and share data, in near-real time, with marketing and CRM agencies, aided by Power BI reports and Rest API to cater to the specific needs of consumers. It integrates Kafka streaming and Azure SQL DB (DWH) into a Magento 2.0 architecture to share data with Eloqua through the Azure Function framework.

The Impact:

Among the benefits are:

  • 30% savings from optimized cloud services
  • Turnaround time for data was reduced from 72 hours (about three days) to around three hours
  • 70%-80% reduction in rework and manual efforts
  • Quick insights on consumer purchase analytics
  • Faster and safer communications with CRM system
  • Near real-time dashboarding, as opposed to the several-day refresh the old system required
  • More efficient and faster customer communications
