Backup Administrator
Responsibilities
Experience in Supporting & implementing Backup solution, Build, Configuration, and management.
- Plan, install and maintain data protection solutions (Dell EMC Data Protection Suite) to support hosted systems (Windows/Linux /MW/Oracle/SQL)
- Installation and configuration of Data Domain system in DC /DR.
- Develop and maintain daily operation procedures of Dell EMC Data Protection Suite (DPS) Enterprise Edition and HP DP
- Configure, monitor, and maintain backup device security to meet security technical implementation guidelines.
- Respond to and resolve backup and restore requests and issues.
- Troubleshoot and resolve backup and restore performance issues.
- Provide technical and configuration data for planning and reporting.
- Install and configure the new backup solution (Dell EMC Data Protection Suite), Data Domain and bring to production.
- Perform test backup and recovery for various application types and test all necessary features
- Add vCenter to new backup solution for auto-discover VMs
- Identify that Datacenter / Folder / Resource Group that contains Test/Dev VMs
- Assign appropriate SLA policy and initiate their protection.
- Ensure those VMS are not backed up elsewhere with previous backup system to avoid creating duplicate copies.
- Backup Tape Library, Data domain
- Participating in root cause analysis on incidents to ensure issues around are acted up on in a timely manner.
- Understanding of ITIL framework of ticketing /Problem ticket/Change process, Emergency change
- Work on Service Improvement Plan and Innovations.
- Troubleshooting complex and business critical issues.
- Work on team skill enhancement and training need identification.
- Creating best practice documents, known error records, knowledgebase articles etc.
- Maintain Agreed SLA’s
- Provide reports as agreed in SOW.
Daily Operational Tasks:
- Perform system, file, and data backup and recovery by creating, managing, and monitoring scripts and jobs via an automated scheduling system.
- Restoration of Backups as and when requested.
- Backup Policy Management
- Change in Backup Policies for a server.
- Proactive load management
- Troubleshoot Master/Media Server related issues.
- Responds to all backup failure alerts, warnings, and errors in a timely, consistent manner.
- Resolves common backup software, hardware issues in a timely, consistent manner.
- Escalates complex issues to internal team members and third-party groups as appropriate.
- Maintains relations with vendor support to ensure quick response to problems.
- Ensures availability and integrity including backup and archiving, database recovery, disaster recovery and system response time.
- Design, coordination and running of various backups and database scripts.
- Performs upgrades and patching of databases on a regular basis.
- Provide on-call (24x7) technical support during OOO hrs.
- Service Now Ticket handling (Incident Tickets, Catalog Tasks, Service Requests)
- Change Implementation (mostly post Business hours)
- Remove the VM protection from existing old backup infra
- Migration and cutover of clients from old backup solution to Dell EMC Data Protection Suite new backup platform.
- Use the existing old backup infra for any recovery of older backups when requested, depending on expiration policy.
- Follow the Sun set approach and remove any existing older backup infra from the environment as backup expires before retiring completely.
- Configuration, operation, maintenance, and administration of the Dell EMC Data Protection Suite backup systems
- Configuration, operation and administration of backup procedures, compliant to data retention policy of Customer
- Deletion of obsolete backup media in accordance with data protection regulations and Customer security policies and -requirements
- Adjustment of backup Master Plan and Backup Plan according to requirements of Customer
- Execution and monitoring of backup and restore procedures in accordance with Customer rules and regulations.
- Regular recovery testing as defined in the agreed test plan
- Verification of the backups
- Configuration changes in Existing Vault profiles (including catalogue and tape management for vault)
- Addition/Deletion of Vault profiles and vault robots (except for when adding new clients)
Skill Set Required:
- Must have minimum 6+ years of hands-on experience working with Dell and HP DP backup software on windows and Linux environment.
- Hands on skill & knowledge on Dell EMC Data Protection Suite
- Implement of Deduplication, compression, replication setup
- IP Network, WAN and LAN free (SAN) based data backup design and configuration (familiarity)
- Data protection and backup recovery solutions familiarity such as using virtual tape, disk to disk to tape, data replication
- Unix and/or Windows systems administration experience
- Configuring, Maintaining NDMP backups for various NAS technologies
- Configuring, Maintaining and Troubleshooting Database Backups
- Perform all chargeback estimation, provisioning, and documentation tasks in a timely manner
- Produce regular reports for management, to assist in cost recovery, capacity planning and consolidation.
- Planning for Media rotation, Management and Offsite Movement
- Scheduling of New Backups/ Modifiying existing Jobs
- Troubleshoot Backup performance Issues(Network and Configuration)
- Troubleshoot Catalog related issues (Handling Configuration and Inconsistency issues)
- Troubleshoot of Exceeded Disk Thresholds and inconsistency in Replica in case of Backup to Disk
- Knowledge of HPE Data protector tool or backup .
- Must have experience developing, modifying and maintaining shell scripts (bash, Perl, etc.),
- Must have strong Documentation abilities.
- Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Must have good communication skills.
- Backup software Certification (Dell / HP )
